DAWN OVER SOUTH PIER

A light was first erected in 1817 and first lit in 1818. There was a great storm in 1824 which washed the top of the structure away. in 1825 a proposal to replace it with another light with an Argand lamp. The pier was extended in 1852 and when completed in 1855 a new cast iron structure was built and powered by Colza oil (obtained from a variety of Turnip), except in stormy weather where sperm whale oil was used. In 1874 gas replaced the oil and before long replaced by electricity. The gallery around the light was removed in the 1950’s.
