These are the memories of Jack Pengelly.
Written in 1988 of his memories of Market Jew Street, The Terrace, Albert Street, St John's Court, Gas Lane and Market Place 1922 through to 1939Market Jew Street

Left hand side of Causewayhaad from the Midland Bank, Cont.
1 Pollacks General Store, Grocery and Sweets.
Then an opening through a small door fitted in the large door, this led into the Greenmarket and Stores behind Taylors Garage Shop.
2 Mrs. Maddern, General Grocer. Known for salted dried fish and always had low cost broken biscuits in the doorway.
3 Colenso, Painters and Decorators, they also sold wallpaper and paints.
4 John Peak, Painters and Decorators.

5 Mrs. or Miss Pearce, Haberdashery and Lace. Later became J. Howe, Gents Hairdresser.
6 Pengelly's Ladies and Gents Boot and Shoe Shop.
Opening to the rear - court of small houses and Kemp, Tinsmith.
8 & Jenkins, Army and navy Stores, Ironmongery and General Goods,
9 Footware, etc.
10 Jelbert's Dairy, well known for Cream sold for 3 1/2 pence (old money) per 1/4 lb.
11 Lukes fish & Chip Shop. Then became Clarkes Book Shop.
12 Jasper, Butcher. Had many changes.
Opening to a small Court of small houses.
13 Robins Restaurant, well known for its lunches.
14 Pengelly's Sweet Shop. Changed to Saunders and Ladies Hairdresser.
15 Sam Payne Richards, Baker and Confectioner. Keen Bowler.
Wide opening to rear of shops and stores including Alverne Chambers, at one time numbered 15a.
17 D.C.L. Yeast Company, suppliers to the bakery trade.
18 P.J. Hutchens, Ironmonger and Plumber.
19 Tillman Chemist, later taken over by Opie.
The Savoy Cinema had a shop on each side, one was a Ladies Hairdressers
Champions Yard and Stables for Horses and Carriages before the Motor Car.
Small Snap belonging to Mr Perkins who gave green shield stamps. Later became Curnow's Shoe Shop.
Mrs. Sharp, small house.
Lanxon’s, Sports Shop and Leather Goods.
Rowe, Butcher.
20 Richards, Gents Hairdresser, later became Edgar Symons who also had a ladies department.
21 Chappel's Wallpaper and Paint Shop.
Jasper, well known at St. Clare and St, Golder Rugby football Games with his hot pies and pasties.
Miss May, Sweets, etc.
25 Monumental Masons, then became Walker's Fresh fish Shop.
Opening to another court of small houses, later an entrance to the electric workshops
26 Miss Trevenna General Stores, well known for salt dried fish
27 Mr Penrose, painter and son of the butcher’s shop above
28 Mr Penross Butchers
