I have never seen a chough in the wild in Cornwall (though I gather there are imported pairs), the closest I have seen was the head of the well on St Michael's Mount, but imaging my surprise and amazement when I saw a pair at the opening of the Dikti Cave on Crete. The entrance ledges had been used for over ten years as nesting sites. ... the only reason it is standing up is because his feet have been nailed to the perch !! Pinin' for the fjords??
I remember seeing on tv a while back (perhaps 'Countryfile' - or some similar programme) that Choughs had returned to somewhere in Cornwall - but where I can't remember. Might have been out The Lizard way, but I'm not sure. I think what had happened is a change in farming habits had meant the local land had returned to it's more natural state which was ideal for them so they had returned. A group of volunteers keep an eye on them.
On the subject of birds, I posted a comment on one of CW's chicken pictures telling you all about a very young duckling that Nancy and I had rescued and nursed back to health. He eventually went to a farm and lived with the chickens. That was about 3 or 4 years ago and we had an email this morning saying he's still going strong and will be joined by other ducks who need a new home soon.
@tabtab13 - brilliant piece of news on the ducks. Yes I saw the report on the Lizard choughs a while back, think it was one of the last things I watched before the demise of my TV licence. The Lizard is one of the few places on Earth that we can see the 'centre of the Earth'. Good old 'Cornish Marble'.
