Because they have so much gear set up on the beach, otherwise they cannot enjoy themselves, and because of the fact that they do not want to walk for more than the prescribed 30 paces to get to the cafe.
The foreshortening make them appear far more cramped that they were, but you knew that of course. That head! I had three similar pictures but that head is in the centre of each of them and could be cropped out of none without losing the impact of the picture.
I must observe more carefully before I shoot.
Changed a bit since we went there as kids - mind you, that was 40-odd years ago. I certainly don't remember seeing so many windbreaks back then. What we took as a family were towels, flasks of hot drinks and sandwiches - and that was about it! We did 'upgrade' one summer though - my brother and I had a couple of those wooden 'belly boards' and had a lot of fun surfing in on the waves with them.
