I believe this to have been taken in St. Just, around 1920 ? Is the event a granite drilling contest ? - and why is the man next to the sergeant armed ?
Fascinating, I will avoid the obvious jokes .... could it be that he was quite simply a member of a rifle club? Of maybe he was on his way to shoot himself some dinner? I see three people are indicated - family?
They are relatives looking on at the Plain-an Gwarry, I had forgotten the name of the place. The rifle does appear to be a Lee Enfield .303 however it doesn’t seem to bother anybody
The way in which the gentleman is holding the rifle, and the way in which he is standing - my mother used to call it n-s-e-w indicates that he stood in that manner in the army; I suggest he was a WWI officer and had some position in St Just at the time.
