I've walked past this hundreds of times and never looked to see what it said on it.Turns out its a survey stone at the end of creeping lane but its the only one i know of so how can they work anything out from it ?
OK the problem is that you have told everyone where this was taken.... it s no longer a mystery. Perhaps if anyone cold explain the O/S to get points here?
This is what s known as a Fundamental Benchmark (FBM) and was used in conjunction with other types of benchmark (eg, flush bracket, bolt, etc) during the geodetic levellings of the country. I know of a few others, but I won t go into any further detail, as my anorak is at the cleaners laugh#
Bench marks indicate the height above sea level calculated from the Newlyn datum. Usually they are cut into a granite part of a building and appear as a convicts arrow with a horizontal line across the top. laugh#
