Trengwainton House
The original house and grounds, before this mansion, was also named Trengwainton, and were owned in 1600 by a Mr Cowlynes.
Then owned by the Arundells of Trerice, near Newquay;
Francis Arundell b1625, settled at Trengwainton c1655, the estate having been owned by the family for many years before.
William Praed, father of James Backwell Praed bought Trengwainton in 1761.
It passed to James Backwell Praed b1779 in c1805, and passed to William Praed,
Retained in the family until 1814 then bought by Sir Rose Price,
late of Jamaica, who made his fortune from sugar and rum.
Sir Rose Price then had this mansion built in 1817.
But in 1833 following the abolition of slavery, his fortune dwindled the property being then mortgaged.
Henry Lewis Stephens b1810 held the mortgage on Trengwainton for many years
(from c 1835, it was rented to John William Ellis Carteret);
Then it was bought by T B Bolitho, November 1866, for £ 33,000.
The mansion house was enlarged by Thomas Robins Bolitho in 1897.
The gardens were created by his son Edward Bolitho in 1925.
