My wife s family lived in St Just, and it was always Cott, despite the name on the map, it was always Cott, all the way down.

My mother s family lived in Carnyorth, and they always said Map? Wass one o they?

Cot Treeve, not Cott. Also locals call it Penanwell.

Apologies, I did not want to offend BoP ( I have never seen it written down). But when my wife first saw the name Porth Nanven on a sign, she went bananas - neither did she recognise Penanwell. For generations with them it had been Cot Valley; she loved the place so much. Much the same indignation when she heard someone refer to the Brisons, not as Brisons (rhyming with Prisons), but as Bry-sons.

Put babies in the COT (Cornish: Koes [Wood] as in COTEhele, PenCOOSE, PenQUITE, COADS Green, PenCOYS which show different stages and corruption of the Cornish word) and you have Babes in the WOOD!! Yes, Cot Valley may well mean Wood[ed] Valley but I can t find early references to the name.

Brisons is said to date back to Norman French days like the Cornish names Grampound (Grand Pont) and Baripper (Beau Repère). In 1576 you find Bresan Island, and Breezon Island in 1750. Brisant even today singular or plural means shoal of rocks, reef or Breaker in French. (I found this in the well-respected Oliver Padel s book Cornish Place Names ).

I grew up in Carnyorth and my mother in Tregeseal. She always called it Cot but I was invited to go to Penanwell by a group of friends from St Just about 40 years ago.

Sorry, newbie, pressed enter when I shouldn t have. I meant to go on to say, I always think of Cot Valley and Penanwell beach. I would definitely go down Cot but if I was going over the cliff from Cape I d be heading for Penanwell.
